As a general rule, the best months for hiking/trekking weather in Nepal are in the peak seasons of April, October and November. However, one has to be a step ahead with regards to heading to the himalayas- the time of year, the trekking region, the type of trek one wants to go with, one’s physical and mental health and of course, prepare and set for a range of weather and conditions, even during the favorable weather, change in climate is inevitable.

Difficulties in Trekking

While being in the midst of nature can be a very pleasing experience for anyone, it is imperative that one is responsible when one forays into the unknown. There will be many factors coming under the way creating difficulties during the trek. Some of which are as follows:

Health hazards:

  • Altitude sickness- As people go higher the physiology of the body cannot change as it needs, so altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness appears. And it can strike anyone as low as 2500 meters of elevation.
  • Strains- Tears or stretching of ligaments developed especially in thigh and calf muscles.
  • Sprains – These are common when the foot muscle turns inwards.
  • Frostbites- Frozen body tissues that most commonly affect fingers, toes, ears, nose and chin areas due to extreme cold weather.
  • Hypothermia- Condition when loss of body heat exceeds gain and body core temperature drops drastically. Physical exhaustion or insufficient clothing and failure to eat or dehydrate in high altitude result in hypothermia.
  • Snow blindness- At the higher elevation there is very less atmosphere to filter solar radiation and the snow reflects all the radiation gives snow blindness.

Unpredictable Factors to Consider:

  • Extreme Weather and Unpredictable Climate Condition
  • The Altitude and Oxygen level
  • Avalanches
  • Landslides
  • Wildlife
